What is Mounjaro®?
Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) is an FDA-approved prescription medication for type 2 diabetes that is also used off-label for weight loss. Studies show that Mounjaro® can help improve blood sugar control while supporting significant and sustainable weight loss when combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise.
How does Mounjaro® work?
Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) works by mimicking two natural hormones in your body—GLP-1 and GIP—that help control blood sugar and appetite. It helps your body release more insulin after meals, reduces the amount of sugar your liver makes, and slows down digestion so you feel full longer. Unlike Ozempic®, which only targets GLP-1, Mounjaro® targets both GLP-1 and GIP, which may make it more effective for blood sugar control and weight loss.
Will my insurance cover the cost?
Whether your insurance will cover Mounjaro® depends on your insurance as well as whether you have type 2 diabetes. As part of your Shapely membership, your weight loss provider and our team of specialized coordinators can send a prior authorization to your insurance to see if they will cover the medication for you. If you do not have diabetes, your Shapely provider may instead recommend Zepbound® which is FDA approved for weight loss and has the same active ingredient as Mounjaro®.

Mounjaro® is making headlines for a reason—it delivers results!

What does my insurance cover?
We navigate insurance on your behalf and are able to work with the vast majority of insurances to get cost-effective access to GLP-1 medications like Wegovy® and Zepbound® . For patients with commercial insurance, medication co-pays are typically $25 per month but depending on the plan may be higher. At this time, Medicare only covers these medications for patients with diabetes, cardiovascular disease (such as stroke or heart attack), and obstructive sleep apnea.
If you do not have insurance, or if insurance doesn't cover the cost of medications, we offer an accessibility program and can send your prescriptions to a compounding pharmacy. Labs are also typically covered by insurance though there may be a co-pay. For patients without insurance, we offer labs for a flat-rate of $75, requiring you to go to a Labcorp location for lab draw.
For members choosing to use insurance for their visits with Shapely, insurance covers any visits with our expert team of providers and dietitians, though you may be responsible for any cost-sharing, such as co-pays, deductibles, and co-insurances. In addition, you will still have a membership fee which covers use of our app, chat features with your Shapely team, access to exclusive education, tracking tools, and concierge support locating medications at local pharmacies.

What if I don’t have insurance?
For patients who do not have insurance or whose insurance does not cover the cost of medication, Shapely offers an accessibility program. We partner with compounding pharmacies to allow you to affordably access the medications you need, including compounded semaglutide starting from $149 per month and compounded tirzepatide starting from $279 per month. For patients without insurance, we have also partnered with LabCorp to to offer a comprehensive lab-panel for a flat-rate of $75.
How much weight will I lose?
Patients started on GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy lose an average 15% of their weight when combined with diet and exercise. With Mounjaro and Zepbound, average weight loss is 20.9%. Note that results are not guaranteed and may vary. With other medications, weight loss can be up to 10%. Ultimately, your weight loss journey is a personal one, and your Shapely team will be by your side to help you achieve your best results
How long will it take me to lose weight?
Typically, we find that patients taking GLP-1 agonists such as Ozempic and Wegovy will lose 10% of weight by 6 months and 15% within 1 year. Results will vary by patient, intervention, and medication prescribed (if appropriate). We find that patients benefit from at least a 12 month comprehensive weight-loss program to establish the proper habits to sustain long-term weight loss
What if I'm ineligible for a GLP-1 agonist?
If you are not a good candidate for GLP-1 agonists, our providers will offer different modalities of weight loss for you, including alternative medications, lifestyle modification, continuous glucose monitoring, and other tools.
Will I need labs as a Shapely patient?
Recent labs are strongly recommended (but not required) prior to initiation of most weight loss medications. We will either order labs for you or accept labs completed within 6 months prior to program enrollment. Labs are typically covered by insurance though there may be a co-pay. For patients without insurance, we offer labs for a flat-rate of $75, requiring you to go to a Labcorp location for lab draw.
